A foundation in science
Before founding Scottsdale Car Care & Speed Shop, Mike built a scientific career in advanced polymers, molecular design, and rechargeable battery research. He earned his PhD in chemistry from the University of Connecticut in 2015, studying electrically conductive and color-changing polymers for flexible and stretchable electronics.
That work required connecting molecular structure with practical performance: developing an idea, testing it, and understanding why a material behaved the way it did.
Training in a Nobel laureate’s laboratory
Mike continued his research at Northwestern University under Sir J. Fraser Stoddart. He was a member of Stoddart’s group when Stoddart shared the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the design and synthesis of molecular machines.
His publication record includes work in Advanced Materials and co-authorship of “Rechargeable aluminium organic batteries” in Nature Energy, a leading energy-research journal. The battery study explored how molecular design could support new approaches to rechargeable energy storage.
From automotive R&D to the driving experience
As an automotive R&D scientist at BASF in Detroit, Mike brought his scientific background into the automotive industry. Alongside that professional work, his interest in driving developed through autocross and road-course experience. He is also a founding member at Podium Club.
Autocross rewards precision and vehicle control. Road-course driving adds sustained demands on preparation, consistency, and mechanical durability. Both align with the approach Mike values in research: establish a baseline, make a purposeful change, and evaluate the result.
Building Scottsdale Car Care & Speed Shop
Starting the shop brought those interests together: technical problem-solving, automotive performance, and working with people who care about their vehicles. Mike’s goal is to build a business where customers understand the reasons behind recommendations and can make informed choices about their cars.
Whether the priority is dependable daily transportation or a performance build, his approach begins with the same questions: What does the vehicle need, what does its owner want to achieve, and how can the team help get it there?
